The Gainesville District Remembers Mother Cora Williams

On February 2, 1931 Cora Lee Williams, was born to the late Tommy Lee and Mary Ella Wilson in Tallahassee, Florida.  She was the youngest girl of nine siblings of which seven preceded her in death. She received her education in the Leon County School System.

In her late teens she moved to High Springs, Florida where she met and married Elder James Williams, Jr., on July 9, 1947.  To this union, ten (10)children were born; James, Maxine, Margurite, Martha, Helen, Elaine, Carolyn, Walter, and Ezra. She is preceded in death by one child, Edna Mae Williams.  She was employed by the General Electric Company from 1970 to 1984.
In 1949, while attending a revival service at Alachua Church of God by Faith ran by Elder Ezra T. Taylor, Mother Williams began seeking the Lord. She accepted Christ in her life and joined High Springs Church of God by Faith under the leadership of Elder John Henry Reid. After being called into the ministry with her husband in 1954, Mother Williams began working with him and over the course of time, pastored nine(9) churches on the Gainesville District. She served in numerous positions: Church Secretary, Sunday School Teacher, WWC President, Home Mission President, Choir President, Program Committee Chairperson, Organist, and Church Mother.
In December 1969 Elder Williams was appointed Superintendent of the Gainesville District. Mother Williams worked just as faithfully as she did when he first started pastoring. On the District level Mother Williams served as Home Mission President and President of the Pastors and Ministers Wives’ Ministry.  She was devoted to teaching and training new ministers wives how to be a pastor’s wife and how to work with members of the congregation. Mother Williams was the Founder and President of the Gainesville District Women’s Conference which began in Year 2000.
She served as First Lady of the Gainesville District for forty-four (44) years, 1970 through 2014. She worked faithfully and vigorously alongside her husband in the church, in her community and on the District. She exemplified a Spirit of Excellence in whatever her hands found to do, from selling peanuts to teaching Sunday School. Her favorite saying was “I’m on my way to Heaven and I’m enjoying the trip.”
On Wednesday, March 11, 2015 Mother Williams completed her earthly journey as she made her way home. The Gainesville District will never forget her labor of love and dedication to the Church of God by Faith, Inc.
